Simple Flower Photos

Taking special photos of the flowers I’m most proud of or want to feature to buyers is one of my favorite parts of my job! I take my simple, variety photos right in the front hall of the farmhouse using my iPhone. Here, I’m describing my optimal lighting setup.

Have a look at how I edit my subject (flowers or botanical elements) and what I’m looking for in terms of lighting and shadows. I do not use a portrait mode here or hardly ever. I don’t feel that you get very genuine-looking results with portrait mode. I think it fails too often and leave images looking sort of fake. So here, with a shallow depth of field, just regular camera mode, good lighting, and some distance from your wall to prevent harsh shadows.

Come behind the screen and check out how I take photos from my perspective with these screen recordings. And then see how I edit my photos right in Instagram. Note: I never use any of the pre-set filters. I don’t like them, I think they either make flowers look unnatural or give viewers a false sense of reality. How many clients have come to you with an unrealistic color palette based on heavily filtered photos from event photographers? It is brutal. I do my best to keep my colors true to nature and only make adjustments that help me communicate that. If you have florist buyers, they’ll want colors to be true as well. So stay away from all the pre-set filter options.
