Deer Fence Upgrade
Our deer fence, previously described here, worked for about 6 years. But, unfortunately, some enterprising beasts learned they could chew through the plastic mesh netting. And they broke in and ravaged the bulb plantings I was making this fall.
As a result, we were forced to explore an upgrade and — I’ve been really happy with how easily we were able to modify our existing fence. Aside from the weight of the material (414lbs per 330ft roll), the actual installation was very simple.
We’re using galvanized steel fencing from Deerbusters.com to upgrade from our existing heavy duty plastic mesh fencing.
We’re using our existing fence posts with “no dig” sleeves. I thought that this fencing would require the installation of thicker, wooden fence posts, but I have been pleasantly surprised that the existing posts are working fine for the size of our plot (roughly 2.5 acres).
Here is a link to the 8ft metal fence we’re using.
8' x 330' Fixed Knot 12.5 ga 20/96/6 ($499) The shipping was very fast for us— the fencing arrived just a few days after ordering. It has a 20-40 year lifespan.
(The 8ft 330 ft Tenax heavy duty plastic mesh fencing rolls cost $384 each.)
I purchased steel cable ties and a steel cable tie tightener to attach the fence more securely to the existing posts. The steel cable tie tool is by Goethe Garden. The tool and a sample pack of cable ties was $34.
