Heated Tunnel Tour

Have a peek inside our heated tunnel this evening. We’re growing anemone and ranunculus and rooting tulips in this space. We’re also overwintering pet plants, dahlias, eucalyptus, and scented germanium.

If you’re interested in greenhouse-growing ranunculus, here is a detailed cultivation sheet with instructions. Note the importance of day length and temperature. We enjoy growing anemone and ranunculus in the winter time because we find that heat during often unpredictable spring seasons / early summer weather throws our plants into dormancy before they’ve even had time to put on a show in the spring, (even when we start them in January). Our anemone and ranunculus are soaked and then pre-sprouted in 50-cell deep root trays. We grow in 3-quart pots (also called gallon pots or 300 series). Ours are from Greenhouse Megastore. We have wholesale buying accounts with hardwood suppliers, but we sometimes find that after stocking delays and freight charges from the distributors, we lose too much time and have little savings in comparison to Greenhouse Megastore— which is quick to deliver.

This is a Farmer’s Friend tunnel that we modified and turned into a 4 season grow space. It has a double poly cover with an inflation kit, a heater, vents and fans, supplemental lighting, and an overhead watering kit.

The center table was built from a kit from Farmtek. The side benches are also from Farmtek and those are just sitting on cinderblocks.

In this course, we teach hydroponic growing and our friends at von Trapp Flowers teach soil forcing. We love both methods and grow some each way every winter, though hydroponics has become our focus. We like that they free us from having to purchase increasingly expensive growing mediums or compost.
