New: Bulbs Direct from NL

An exciting development has been in the works for us at Little Farmhouse Flowers over the last year. Our sister business, The Tulip Workshop has been encouraging and teaching growers all over the world to join us in the art and science of winter tulip forcing.

As more and more students join our program, it only feels natural to take the next step and help these growers source the same kinds of bulbs that we’re most interested in working with ourselves.

So- right now- on some ship somewhere on the Atlantic Ocean - is our first container of tulip bulbs direct from The Netherlands to our farm here in the Adirondacks. We’re serving as the organizer for this project, as it is next to impossible to sort out paperwork that would allow our virtual, online course (The Tulip Workshop) to bring a perishable agricultural product into the US. I have learned a thing or two about all the paperwork over the last 4 months— let me tell you— it’s a beast!

This first round of bulbs that we are bringing in is for professional growers only. They will be offered exclusively to students of The Tulip Workshop as a benefit of joining our educational program. We hope that this line of our own collection of bulbs will become a staple of our program and a reliable resource for students.

In the future, we plan to receive a shipment earlier in the fall with bulbs suitable for use by home gardeners. These bulbs will likely become part of the annual fall bulb sale that you see going on right now. On a side note— this year’s sale ENDS on Sunday. So be sure to get your orders in quick. We are filling orders as they come in each day - so we have speedy turn around for those of you who would like to plant soon! (Note: You can plant tulips right up until you can’t get your shovel in the ground because it has frozen.)

But for this first trial of importing bulbs, we are working with our students who understand the possible pitfalls of our project and will be understanding of our situation as the next few weeks pass and we learn exactly how the final steps of importing tulips bulbs will unfold.

What does an enormous delivery of bulbs look like? We’ll be sure to share that with you. We’re preparing for a whole lot of hustle and a great “farm fit” work out. So, if you hear/see photos and videos of a whole lot of tulips (as if we didn’t already bring in a lot before!) now you know what we’re up to!
