Quick Tips for Smoother iPhone Video
Here are a few of my favorite tips for capturing quick video tips on the fly. Be sure you watch through the last one— it’s really * the chef’s kiss!
If you’re shooting outdoors and it’s sunny, turn your exposure down. This will give your video a more professional, less “generic auto” look.
Take 3-4 seconds of video without really moving. Just stand still, except for the effects of nature like the breeze, etc. You might be surprised by how much you prefer these clips over others and they can also be nice for looping content.
Try taking each shot using a single direction of movement. Avoid moving up and down or back and forth.
Use the “cinematic” mode to capture a shallow depth of field and help your viewer focus on the thing you’d like them to focus on. But beware of weird borders between subjects. This can be challenging if you have a complicated subject and a busy background. If you see weird pockets of focus, try to shoot from an angle or distance that allow you to separate them more.
Use slow motion to capture flowers you’re holding without shaking your hand. Trying to capture a bouquet you’ve made or a boutonniere you’re holding? Slo-mo is they way to go!
Use slow motion plus upside down backward movement to capture smooth movement through space. Moving backward, toward your body is smoother and easier than moving forward for many people.
