Tissue Culture Alstro Check-in
Hello and welcome back. Here is a little tour of the tissue culture alstroemeria so you can see the kinds of plants we’re working with. We will continue to harvest from these productive plants all the way past frost (with our cover).
We lost last year’s non-patented plants, after successfully over wintering our alstroemeria for a couple years. It was a bit of a heartbreak, but good to know that we are just on the edge of hardiness for those.
These plants are untested in the hardiness department. They may be even more fragile. We have some ideas for protecting them, but we’re not going to do anything fancy. No heated greenhouse. We’ll likely lay down a couple strands of Christmas lights per row, add some mulch, some frost cloth, a couple some landscape fabric. We may even install low tunnels on top of those layer, for some added protection. I’m not messing around this time! And don’t worry- which it may seem like a rodent’s dream— alstroemeria are not liked by rodents (they cause digestion issues to put it nicely).
So have a listen and let me know what you think. Would you be willing to grow them under the patent rules described?
