Viburnum Hedge

Hello, fellow flower enthusiasts! I hope this post finds you well. Allow me to share a treasured part of our farm — this great viburnum hedge. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this hedge is a multifaceted marvel, beloved by pollinators and birds, and a striking feature in any landscape.

A Seasonal Delight

The hedge graces us with a changing display throughout the year. In spring and summer, it offers rich green foliage, as well as beautiful blossoms. Come fall, it dazzles with shiny blue berries, provided you have the right pollinator species nearby. Its versatility makes it an excellent choice for a windbreak, adding structure and life to garden settings.

Get to Know Your Viburnum

Today, we'll explore the "All That Glitters" and "All That Glows" varieties of viburnum. These plants require the presence of both types to ensure the production of those coveted blue berries. Whether used in floral arrangements or appreciated in situ, their long-lasting foliage enhances their allure. The growth habit of viburnum is perfect for floral uses, offering tall, slender stems crowned with clusters of flowers.

Our own fascination with viburnum began when we noticed the arrowwood viburnum blooming around the meadow outside our deer fence. This native species inspired us to explore other varieties. We found our match in some viburnum varieties that thrive not just in beauty, but in functionality.

Planting and Caring

These plants came from Spring Meadow Nursery as quick-turn liners in roughly two-gallon pots — the largest size offered at the time. Planted about four years ago, they've adapted brilliantly to our heavy clay soil. Their resilience means they flourish whether in well-draining or clay soils, acidic or alkaline conditions.

Expanding the Garden

I have plans to propagate these lovely plants around our property, envisioning a sprawling hedge providing shelter from both winds and for birds. Observing the local fauna, with birds nesting within and pollinators buzzing around, is a joyful experience.

Currently, our viburnum plants stand six to eight feet tall and about six feet wide. While we've planted a whole row for our needs, a few strategically planted viburnum can make a powerful statement in any garden.

Whether you’re looking to fill market bouquets or just enhance your outdoor space, these plants perform beautifully.
