Rolling Workspace Carts

This week’s video is about our space-saving rolling carts. We have 7 of these carts at our farm. 3 are in our little studio shed and they can be stored under the back counter and 4 have been put together in our new barn as workspace. This is the kind of storage I feel like I can never have enough of. The top is a 2ftx4ft workspace and when we line these up in a room, we can assemble so many mixed bouquets at a time! I’ll show you how we do that in a process video sometime. They are also great for sort of blocking off a space if you are setting up a pick-up area in a larger room and you don’t want customers roaming around. We’ve toyed with an idea to add a curtain on one side of these that would look pretty and hide the things being stored below. I think that would be a nice upgrade.

Check out how we made these rolling carts with storage. We cut down each of the 4 poles a few inches so that the total height of the cart is comfortable to work at and so that it can be tucked under the counter at the back of the studio when we don’t need it. These carts are a great tool to have in a busy studio where you have lots of supplies on hand and need a place to keep them without sacrificing countertop workspace. They actually help us double our countertop workspace!

We buy the shelf sets at Target- they are 5-tier shelf sets. We’re only using the bottom half of those sets here with 3 of the 5 shelves (the top half of the shelves are in our walk-in cooler). The wheels are sold separately with these sets. I always buy them so that our shelves are mobile and at the very least we can pull them out to sweep around them if we are only using them for storage and not as mobile carts like this. Be sure to have a listen and see why I settled on this size/model of wire rack shelving. The butcher block tops were purchased at Lowe’s in the millwork section of the lumber aisles. They are 2 feet x 4 feet and they fit right on top. We stain them and then seal them with marine varnish (Helmsman varnish by Minwax) to protect them from all the water that is constantly spilled on them. We add a couple of screws from below, inside the framework of the shelves so that the tops can’t slide off the shelf sets. Hope that was a helpful tip. We love these rolling carts! If you can’t find the right tool for the job, make it to suit your needs!
