How to Make a Floral Hair Comb

Start with some plastic from the recycling bin. (Not kidding.) Wash it clean though, duh!
Build a base on a hair comb from the drug store. Trim the plastic to fit the comb and round off the top.
Cut and design with beautiful, hardy flowers and greens from the flower farm right outside your studio 😉. We used mini roses, lavender, boxwood, hydrangea, cascading hops oregano, perennial scabiosa pods, ninebark pods, purple limonium latifolium. These are all perennials on our farm. Building a diverse perennial collection has been a game changer for us. Not only are the perennials easier on us as farmers, but they also add interest to our work.
Warning: When designing, the biggest mistake we see is a propensity to work in a flat manner- to essentially worry more about covering the base than making a 3-dimensional design. To avoid this, be intentional about placing elements that will appear to be growing out of the base (upwards toward the ceiling when the design is laying flat) - as if they are “growing” out of cracks between larger elements you’ve placed. This is also a good rule of thumb for adding interest and dimension to wrist corsages and other wearable floral designs. Think less like you’re making a flat mosaic or mandala with pieces that are just sitting side by side and more like you’re building a little garden-forest world, if that makes any sense at all.
