Misc. Bulb Forcing

Here’s a quick video about some of the other kinds of bulbs we’re planting and crate growing. All of these bulbs received their cooling in dry storage over the winter time in the warehouse at Ampersand Bulb Co.

Then, they were planted in soilless mix and watered in well and rooted for about 2 weeks (or until roots showed) in our cool barn at 40-50F.

Lastly, they’ve been growing at about 55-70F in our greenhouse. We’re trying to make sure we keep them well-watered and prevent them from getting too hot.

Note: this method is different than what most people would or should do for similar plants. If you do not have your dry storage dialed in, you are better off to plant your bulbs on receipt in the fall, allow them root and cool at a lower temp around 40F, and then pull them into a warmer grow space when their cooling weeks have been achieved.

In this video we’re sharing the progress of:

Allium (Forelock, Globemaster, Pinball Wizard)

Hyacinth (Pearl)

Leucojum

Nectaroscordum

Fritillaria Imperialis (Aurora)

Wood hyacinth (mixed colors)

We have Camassia rooting now. We’ll let you know if we’re able to get it to flower, too.

Is there something you’d like us to try? Let us know. For the purpose of learning— we’re trying to look into things that are not typically forced here in the US, at least.

Some of the more common plants we force are tulips, daffodils, amaryllis, paperwhites, muscari, hyacinth, crocus.
