Unheated Caterpillar Tunnel Temperatures
How low do they go? How hot do they get? This video explains the temperature swings we see in unheated tunnels during the coldest and warmest times of the year. Have a look/listen and let me know if you have any questions. General takeaways: we can grow perennials that are a zone warmer in our unheated tunnels. Winter benefits: plants are kept dry and the soil banks heat from the warm days to protect the roots of plants that would otherwise die outside. Summer benefits: temperatures can aid in pest and disease control among your plants (there is some nice content about this as it pertains to roses in our upcoming rose course) and plants are protected from overhead rain and wind. But it isn’t all sunshine and rainbows- these spaces require a lot of monitoring. Take care to make sure the spaces don’t get too hot or humid. Be sure plants receive proper irrigation since they aren’t getting rain water.
