Custom Tunnel Lengths

Here are a couple of easy ways to modify caterpillar tunnel kits to suit the length of your beds. Our kits come from Farmers Friend. Our preferred model is the Gothic Pro. The Pro kits come with some additional wind bracing and some extra height- which makes working in the side beds a little more comfortable.

In this video, I explain how we either shorten the distance between the ribs or reserve a few ribs from a kit to make it shorter. Sometimes we do some of both. If you have beds that are 75ft long, for example, you could order and install 3, 100ft tunnels (over different seasons if need be) reserve the last 25ft of each tunnel, and then build an entirely new tunnel with the “extra pieces”.

Please note when I mention the chop saw blade at the end of the video, I mean to say- a “metal cutting blade”, rather than a metal blade. Your saw blade needs to be able to cut through steel pipe- I was thinking that in my mind, but it didn’t quite come out right! Hope this helps anyone who is trying to figure out how to customize the length of a larger tunnel they may want to construct. Please share questions and comments if you have them.
