Prairie Smoke Plant
Here is a fun little plant that I adore for personal flowers and small arrangements. ‘Prairie Smoke’ is a type of geum (blooms at the same time as other geum plants). It is perennial in zones 3-7 and it produces flowers that resemble windswept hairdos.
This plant is small— after settling in for a year it produced flowers in the late spring. (3 flowers per 8-10 inch stem) And even the young plant I’m showing in the video could help me with up to 14 boutonnieres (of course I’ll add other ingredients, too, but the point is, despite it’s small size— it is still useful to me).
For those of you who worry about stem length — some of you obsess over it. Determine if you (or your customers) have a need for small things. Our florist buyers are always looking for unique, non-wilting elements for personal flowers and this plant fits the bill.
We purchased our plants from American Meadows. Sign up for their notification list if they are sold out. You can also find it through Direct Native Plants.com. (I have not purchased from them before.)
